Film Genres

Film Genres

When choosing a genre for my AS Media project, I had to consider a few different factors including my target audience; age range, gender and interests. I had to also acknowledge the setting, the narrative stance as well as the sub-genre. The film opening is a hybrid of genre's however the most pre-dominant theme or category is 'Thriller'.

Thriller...Now usually a film in this genre would have a target audience of 18+, however this would depend on the sub-category as 'Thriller' itself is an extremely broad category

''Thrillers provide such a rich literary feast''.-James Patterson

The Primary elements of a Thriller

1.) The protagonist(s) faces death or someone who is considerably close to the character.
2.) Initially the antagonist(s) force must appear to be stronger of that of the protagonists.
3.) The main plot line focuses on a mystery that must be solved.
4.) The protagonist(s) and antagonist(s) will fight on a mental level as well as a physical one.
5.) All action and characters must be credibly realistic and natural in their representation of on-screen performance.

  1. Dean, I'm pleased to see you've started to work through your blog. Looking at the suggested posts for a blog, there are a couple I think you need to include - the first being what the specific brief is, and what suggested sites you include in your research.
With that done you need to put a post in here about your choice of genre & narrative and identify a film that inspired you, and then jot down what the generic conventions of that text are. Highlight what you aim to do in your opening, show your storyboard and why you think it will succeed in interesting fans of this type of film.
Ideally, all this would come out in more than one blog post.
Also, please note that hybrid films are films that mix genres together, like Action-Thriller, or Horror-Comedy...
